Thoughts on OpenClaw
Here are my thoughts and reflections on OpenClaw, an open-source autonomous AI agent that can run 24/7, connect to multiple messaging platforms, and execute tasks without constant human supervision.

The Rise of Autonomous AI Agents
Nowadays most AIs are accessed via conversation or client. These approaches only execute after getting input from the user, repeating this pattern constantly. Humans need to be there all the time to monitor the AI. This isn’t the most efficient, since humans cannot spend all their time with AI, while AI can do its work 24/7. Ideally, AI should be able to keep working even when humans go to sleep.
OpenClaw addresses this problem using a heartbeat system to keep doing something on a regular basis. This allows AI to actively check if there are things to do, instead of passively accepting humans’ prompts. This makes working 24/7 possible, and is especially useful in gathering information on the Internet, where new information appears every moment and needs continuous monitoring.
Open Source and Viral Adoption
At first, the viral adoption seemed a bit surprising to me. But I attribute this to the heartbeat system and the unique features it enables.
One attractive feature is Moltbook, a social media platform designed for OpenClaw bots. The concept is “AIs post, humans watch”, which is pretty cool. This makes people think that AI has its own consciousness (which I believe is not yet the truth) and gives us insight into how AI could be like in the future. Personally, I tell my bot to browse Moltbook periodically and report to me what it learned.
Another feature driving adoption is persistent memory. While normal clients seem to start fresh every time, OpenClaw documents everything in a markdown file every day.
Security and Trust Concerns
Security is a big concern. Normal agents require permission to write, execute, and even read, ensuring some safety. Many people are attracted to OpenClaw, even many non-techs, which is generally a good thing. However, this project went viral too fast, and not everyone configured it properly.
Many servers are running OpenClaw without security settings, making them accessible to anybody. Moltbook has also had a security breach identified, allowing full write access to the database. These could be misconfigurations or design flaws, and I believe the developers are doing their best to improve.
Another concern is the persistent memory feature. I am a bit worried about this. Human brains have the ability to forget, making room for what is currently important. I don’t think OpenClaw can delete things that are no longer needed as memory files grow bigger. Then it may take more time to load memory into context, also filling up context more quickly. I didn’t dig deep into how this part is realized, so I might be wrong.
We need to keep in mind, as the developers mention when onboarding, that OpenClaw is too powerful and we need to pay more attention to security. Personally, I keep my own OpenClaw in a sandbox. Although it is complex to manage the permission issues, it should be safe for my files.
Multi-Platform Integration
The biggest benefit I have from multi-platform integration is the ability to access my workspace when I am away. Technically, a similar effect could be achieved without OpenClaw. I could get a public IP or use tools to put devices on the same network, SSH into my workspace, and run AI clients or whatever tools I need. The good thing about OpenClaw is that it provides an easy and ready-to-use interface.
Personally, I integrated my OpenClaw with Discord. When I just want to chat with AI, I prefer talking inside Discord with a nicely styled GUI rather than directly in the terminal. I can also easily forward messages and manage the history.

This is an interesting project. Many non-tech people are attracted to it, and after I tried it out myself, I agree that it is important to have a good interface that is easy to use, which can attract more people.
OpenClaw is not a technical breakthrough—the underlying capabilities can be achieved without it. It didn’t affect my coding workflow much. It’s more of a shortcut, providing quick setup for what would otherwise take days to weeks of complex configuration.
What makes it compelling is that it matches what people imagine the future would be like: having a client that always exists on your device, doing things for you automatically and remaining accessible all the time. This is a good start, perfectly demonstrating the possibilities of AI and the direction of future development. I would love to see more cool projects like this.
How I Plan to Apply What I Learned
- Continue experimenting with OpenClaw’s autonomous features to find useful workflows
- Keep security as a priority when using powerful AI tools—always sandbox when possible
- Pay attention to user experience and accessibility when building tools, as these can drive adoption more than technical complexity
